Updated November 2026. Molecule facts, UK label wording and Verve label figures checked on 5 November 2026. Verve makes an NMN capsule, covered near the end.
NMN is nicotinamide mononucleotide, a nucleotide: a small molecule made of nicotinamide, a sugar called ribose and one phosphate group, formula C11H15N2O8P, molecular weight 334.22. Your cells make it and convert it into NAD+, a coenzyme found in every living cell. It occurs in small amounts in foods such as edamame, broccoli, avocado and tomato, at under 2mg per 100g. UK labels name it "nicotinamide mononucleotide" or "β-NMN", at 250mg or 500mg a capsule and 500mg to 1,000mg a day. There is no NHS daily amount, no NRV and no authorised GB health claim for NMN, so this guide describes the compound and the label, not effects. Check with your doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition. Not for children.
The short answer
- What it is: a nucleotide (nicotinamide + ribose + phosphate). The body makes it and converts it into NAD+.
- Where it occurs: inside cells, and in small amounts in vegetables, fruit, raw beef and shrimp.
- On the label: "nicotinamide mononucleotide" or "β-NMN". The mg figure is the molecule itself. The NRV column shows a dash.
- Typical label doses: 250mg or 500mg a capsule, 500mg to 1,000mg a day, 30 or 60 capsules a pack. Powders use a 500mg scoop.
- What it does: no authorised GB health claim exists, so we make none. Compare on dose per day, purity, the certificate of analysis and other ingredients.
- From Verve: Verve NMN 1000mg, 1000mg of NMN per two capsules, nothing else in the capsule, every batch independently lab-tested for purity, with the certificate for your batch on request, and made in the UK.
What NMN is
NMN is a single nucleotide: a nicotinamide ring joined to a ribose sugar, with one phosphate group attached. It dissolves in water.
It comes in two forms, alpha and beta anomers, which differ in how the nicotinamide ring sits on the sugar. The beta form is the one the body makes and uses, which is why labels say "beta-nicotinamide mononucleotide" or "β-NMN".
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every living cell. It takes part in the reactions cells use to release energy from food. In one of the routes cells use to make it, an enzyme called NAMPT turns nicotinamide into NMN and a second, NMNAT, turns NMN into NAD+. So NMN is one of the molecules cells convert into NAD+. That is all "NAD+ precursor" means on a label: a chemistry term, not a claim about effects.
NMN is not vitamin B3. Nicotinamide on its own is a form of niacin (vitamin B3), with an NHS daily amount and an NRV of 16mg. NMN is a different, larger molecule with no NRV, so its row shows a dash.
Where NMN occurs
In the body, NMN is found inside cells, mainly in the nucleus, mitochondria and cytoplasm, and in blood and urine. A 2022 review in the Journal of Advanced Research gives 0.25mg to 1.88mg per 100g for vegetables, 0.26mg to 1.60mg for tomato and avocado, and 0.06mg to 0.42mg for raw beef and shrimp, citing a 2016 study by Mills and colleagues.
| Food | NMN, mg per 100g |
|---|---|
| Vegetables as a group, including edamame (immature soybean pods), cucumber and mushroom | 0.25 to 1.88 |
| Avocado | 0.36 to 1.60 |
| Broccoli | 0.25 to 1.12 |
| Cabbage | 0.0 to 0.90 |
| Tomato | 0.26 to 0.30 |
| Raw beef | 0.06 to 0.42 |
For scale, a 500mg capsule holds more NMN than 25kg of the richest vegetable measured (our calculation).
Names and forms on UK labels
On UK labels the ingredient appears as:
- "Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN)", the full chemical name. Verve's label reads this way.
- "β-NMN" or "beta-nicotinamide mononucleotide", naming the beta form.
- "Uthever NMN", a branded raw material. It says who made the powder, not how much is in the capsule.
"Pure", "ultra pure" and "stabilised" are descriptions, not forms. Every UK label we read names the molecule itself, not a salt or a hydrate, so 500mg of NMN on the label is 500mg of the molecule (unlike calcium alpha-ketoglutarate, where part of the weight is calcium). Two more checks: NMNH (dihydronicotinamide mononucleotide) is a different compound sold by some UK brands; and the capsules we read use a plant cellulose (HPMC) shell, with one adding rice flour as a bulking agent.
How UK labels state the dose
Labels state NMN per capsule or per serving, and a serving can be one or two capsules, so the number on the front of the pack is not always the amount in one capsule. Read the nutrition table.
| What the label says | Per capsule | Per day, as directed | Days in a 60-capsule pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000mg per serving (two capsules) | 500mg | 1,000mg | 30 |
| 500mg per capsule, take one a day | 500mg | 500mg | 60 |
| 500mg per capsule, take two a day | 500mg | 1,000mg | 30 |
| 250mg per capsule, take two a day | 250mg | 500mg | 30 |
| Powder, 500mg scoop | n/a | 500mg a scoop | 30g of powder is 60 scoops |
Across the UK products we checked, capsules hold 250mg or 500mg, directions give 500mg or 1,000mg a day, and packs hold 30 or 60 capsules. To compare products, work out NMN per day as directed, NMN per pack and days per pack. For the dash in the NRV column, see what NRV means on a label.
Purity and the certificate of analysis
The purity figure says how much of the powder in the capsule is NMN. UK brands that state one say 99% to 99.8%; some state none. A figure on a web page is a claim. The certificate of analysis (CoA), the laboratory's report for one batch, is the evidence. Read these lines:
- Identity: a test (usually HPLC) confirming the powder is beta-NMN.
- Assay or purity: the percentage of NMN, with the limit tested against.
- Heavy metals: lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, result and limit.
- Microbes: total plate count, yeast and mould, E. coli, Salmonella.
- Loss on drying: the moisture in the powder.
- Batch number, test date and laboratory. Match the batch to your pack.
Of the UK brands we checked, one publishes a certificate on the page, several supply it on request, and one says nothing about testing.
Storage and moisture
NMN is stable as a dry powder and less stable in water. A 2023 degradation study by Xiang and colleagues found that NMN in solution breaks down over time, faster with heat and with strong acid or alkali, and recommends low temperature and protection from moisture. So keep capsules in the closed pack, cool and dry, not in a bathroom. Mix powder and drink it. Of the eight UK products we checked, three say no fridge is needed, two recommend a fridge, and three give no storage line. Follow your pack.
Who should check with a doctor first
There is no NHS page on NMN supplements, so this uses the wording on Verve's product page: anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, and anyone taking medication or with a medical condition. Not suitable for children. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
What does NMN do?
The straight answer: there is no authorised health claim for NMN in Great Britain. Verve makes none; this guide describes the compound and the label, not effects. What can be said is chemistry: NAD+ is a coenzyme found in every living cell, and NMN is one of the molecules cells convert into NAD+. Where a brand describes what NMN will do for you, that is the brand's view; compare on the label instead.

Verve NMN 1000mg Capsules
Verve's label table has one row: Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), 1,000mg per serving, NRV "-", with the note "NRV% not established unless stated".
- Per serving: 1,000mg across two capsules, so 500mg a capsule. 60 capsules, 30 servings.
- Ingredients: NMN and a plant cellulose shell. No blends, fillers or bulking agents.
- How to take it: two capsules, once a day, with water, ideally before midday. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
- Testing: every batch is independently lab-tested for purity. The certificate of analysis for your batch is available on request from hello@vavaverve.com. The purity figure is on that certificate. The page gives no storage line.
Not suitable for children. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition, check with your doctor first. The full label is on the NMN 1000mg Capsules page, and it sits beside seven other UK products in our best NMN supplement UK comparison.
Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
NMN: your questions
Is NMN the same as vitamin B3?
No. Nicotinamide is a form of vitamin B3 (niacin), which has an NRV of 16mg. NMN is a different, larger molecule with no NRV, so it shows a dash in the NRV column.
How much NMN is in a capsule?
On UK labels, 250mg or 500mg, with directions of 500mg or 1,000mg a day. Check whether the front-of-pack number is per capsule or per serving, then multiply by the capsule count for the NMN in the pack.
Does NMN need to be kept in the fridge?
Follow your pack: of the UK products we checked, three say no fridge is needed, two recommend one and three say nothing. A 2023 study found NMN breaks down in water, faster with heat, and recommends low temperature and protection from moisture, so keep capsules sealed and dry.
What does NMN do?
There is no authorised health claim for NMN in Great Britain, so we do not describe effects. In chemistry terms, NMN is one of the molecules cells convert into NAD+, a coenzyme found in every living cell. Compare products on NMN per day, purity, the certificate and other ingredients.
