Athletic Greens Review UK 2024

Athletic Greens is one of the most popular greens drinks, as it has been promoted by health influencers like Andrew Huberman and you may have seen it pop up on your Instagram feed or on podcasts. Well if so, that’s no surprise since the brand spends a staggering $2.2 million on podcasts per month. But what’s the science behind the product, and its ingredients? In this Athletic Greens review, we’ll take a deep look at the ingredients, the benefits, and everything else you need to know.

Athletic Greens Review: Overview

Verdict

Verdict: Overall, Athletic Greens is a solid contender in the greens market. It contains 75 well-chosen ingredients, and a range of health benefits. However, it’s slightly overpriced, misses out some nutrients, and use proprietary blends which come at the cost of informed consumer choice.

In this Athletic Greens review, we’ll take a look at its:

- Ingredients and benefits
- Transparency
- Pricing
- Anecdotal Experiences & Reviews

About Athletic Greens (AG1)

AG1 by Athletic Greens is a supplementary greens drink designed to support overall health and fitness.

It’s a blend of various vegetables, vitamins, minerals, and adaptogens aimed at providing a comprehensive range of nutrients in a convenient daily scoop.

AG1 is popular among athletes and health-conscious individuals for its potential benefits in enhancing energy levels, boosting immunity, and improving digestive health.  But we’ll discuss this later on.

How Does AG1 Work?

Athletic Greens AG1 is designed to simplify the process of getting daily nutrients through one convenient habit, rather than having to eat endless plates of fruit and vegetables.

It’s taken by powder that can be mixed with water or any other liquid, but interestingly there has been more of a trend to mix greens with smoothies, or even create Latte’s recently.

Athletic Greens (AG1) Pros and Cons At a Glance

Cons of Athletic Greens AG1
  • Cost: The product is relatively expensive, especially if consumed daily, which might not be affordable for everyone. It’s also more expensive than competitors.
  • Proprietary Blends: The use of proprietary blends makes it difficult to know the exact amount of each ingredient, potentially affecting the product's effectiveness and it raises the question of underdosing.
  • Lacks Certain Nutrients: Notably, it doesn't include essential nutrients like Vitamin D its standard formula which is crucial for for building and maintaining healthy bones.
  • Mixed Reviews: While many users report positive experiences, some have not noticed significant changes, and there are concerns over its suitability for people with specific health conditions like auto-immune disorders.
  • Customer Service Issues: There have been complaints regarding the subscription service and customer service.
  • Taste: The taste might not be appealing to everyone, which can affect the consistency of use.

Athletic Greens (AG1) Review: Ingredients

Now that we’ve taken a look at the basics, pros and cons, and how AG1 works, let’s take a look at the details.

Here’s an overview of the Athletic Greens ingredients:

  1. Vitamins and Minerals: It contains a variety of essential vitamins such as vitamins A, C, E, K2, and various B vitamins. Minerals present include calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, chromium, and others.
  2. Adaptogens: AG1 includes adaptogenic herbs and mushrooms like ashwagandha, reishi mushroom, and Rhodiola rosea, which help the body adapt to stress and promote overall health and wellness.
  3. Digestive Enzymes and Prebiotics: The product includes digestive enzymes (like bromelain and papain) and prebiotic fibers (such as inulin) to support digestive health and gut microbiome.
  4. Superfoods: It features a range of superfoods, including spirulina, chlorella, and wheatgrass, known for their rich nutrient and antioxidant content.
  5. Probiotics: AG1 contains probiotics like lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium bifidum, which are beneficial for digestive and immune health.
  6. Additional Ingredients: The supplement also includes ingredients like spirulina, lecithin, chlorella, beetroot powder, kelp, and acerola, each known for specific health benefits ranging from immune support to cardiovascular health.

Fruit and Vegetable Extracts: AG1 contains extracts from various fruits and vegetables like papaya, pineapple, bilberry, beetroot, rosehip, carrot, spinach, cocoa bean, grape seed, green tea, licorice root, Lycium berry, and ginger.

Reviewing the Ingredients

Now that we’ve taken a look at the ingredients, we also wanted to analyse what’s inside, and what isn’t.

Firstly, Athletic Greens does not include Vitamin D in its standard AG1 formula.

Vitamin D is crucial for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation.

It’s also just slightly annoying that it has 75 ingredients, and that some like Vitamin D (which you’d expect inside) aren’t on the list.

Proprietary Blends

A proprietary blend in supplements refers to a combination of ingredients where the total amount of the blend is listed, but not the specific amounts of each individual ingredient.

This lack of transparency can be a concern for several reasons:

  • Lack of Ingredient Transparency: It's difficult to determine the quantity of each ingredient, making it challenging to assess the effectiveness of the blend.
  • Potential Under-Dosing: Without individual ingredient amounts listed, there's no way to know if the supplement contains effective dosages of each component.
  • Allergy and Sensitivity Concerns: For individuals with specific dietary needs or sensitivities, not knowing the exact amounts of each ingredient can be problematic.

Athletic Greens contains four proprietary blends, which we’ve taken a closer look at below.

Our main concern isn’t the choice of ingredients, but more so the doses.

For example, Ashwagandha is shown to likely decrease stress and improve sleep at optimal dosages, but you can’t be sure that Athletic Greens contains the optimal dose, and this is the case for almost ALL nutrients.

Companies often use this measure to make a product seem more premium than it is.

For example, a blend could contain 10 ingredients, 2 of which are very expensive, so they’re listed even if it’s a tiny dosage… while all the cheaper ingredients have much higher doses.

Are we saying this is definitely the case with AG1?

No.

Is it possible?

Most definitely.

But we’ll probably never know, unless Athletic Greens takes a fully transparent approach like Verve V80.

Alkaline, Nutrient-Dense Raw Superfood Complex

The Alkaline, Nutrient Dense-Raw Superfood Complex is as the name suggests a blend of various raw superfoods.  While we don’t know the exact dosages of the ingredients, we can say that we like many of the choices.

For example, Spirulina, Chlorella, Alfalfa, Barley Leaf, and Wheatgrass are some excellent greens & superfoods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

We’d hope that these are at least 300-500mg doses, because that would be the sweet spot in these types of mixes to get a nice mix of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Active Ingredients: organic spirulina, lecithin, organic apple powder, inulin, organic wheat grass juice powder, organic alfalfa powder, organic chlorella powder, organic barley leaf, acerola fruit juice powder extract, broccoli flower powder, papaya fruit powder, pineapple fruit concentrate, bilberry fruit extract, beetroot powder, rosehip fruit powder, carrot root powder, spinach leaf powder, cocoa bean polyphenol extract, grape seed extract, green tea extract, licorice root powder, lycium berry fruit extract, ginger rhizome powder, slippery elm bark powder, kelp whole plant powder

Nutrient Dense Extracts, Herbs, and Antioxidant Complex

This is a mix of herbs, extracts, and adaptogens that are shown to improve sleep, decrease stress, alongside a list of other benefits.

It includes Ashwagandha Root Extract and Rhodiola Root are both renowned for their adaptogenic qualities, which aid the body in managing stress and enhancing mental performance.

Interestingly, it also includes Stevia, which is a natural sweetener and sugar substitute.

Again, we can only comment on the overall choices since we don’t have the amounts of each individual ingredient. But the ingredient diversity is pretty good.

Active Ingredients: alkaline pea protein isolate, citrus bioflavonoids extract, artichoke leaf extract, citric acid, rhodiola root, eleuthero root extract, rosemary leaf extract, milk thistle seed extract, R,S alpha-lipoic acid, ashwagandha root extract, dandelion whole plant dry concentrate, hawthorn berry extract, beta-glucans, policosanol, coenzyme Q10, stevia leaf powder

Digestive Enzyme and Super Mushroom Complex

The next proprietary blend contains various digestive enzymes that can help digestion, and mushrooms that can increase the bioavailability of other ingredients. Reishi and Shiitake Mushrooms can also assist the immune system, reduce inflammation, promote relaxation, improve sleep and manage stress and anxiety.

Ingredients: astragalus root powder, bromelain, burdock root powder, reishi mushroom powder, shiitake mushroom powder

Dairy-free probiotics 7.2 billion CFU

The final blend is the dairy-free probiotics blend containing 7.2 billion CFU.

Probiotics are live microorganisms, usually bacteria, that are similar to beneficial microorganisms found in the human gut. They are often referred to as "good" or "friendly" bacteria. Probiotics are believed to provide health benefits when consumed, typically by improving or restoring the gut flora.

Often, probiotics are found in dairy products such as Yoghurt, Milk, and Kefir. However, as we’re sure you know, many people are dairy intolerant.

AG1 by Athletic Greens caters to this by including a ‘dairy-free’ probiotic blend.

The two types of probiotics in this blend are:

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus is a good kind of bacteria found in your gut. Think of it as a tiny helper for your stomach. It turns lactose, which is the sugar in milk, into lactic acid. This is good because lactic acid makes your gut a bit acidic, which helps to stop bad bacteria from growing there. This little bacterium is great for keeping your digestion on track and helps your body fight off germs. It's also involved in making vitamin K, which is important for healthy blood and bones.

Bifidobacterium bifidum is another friendly bacteria living mainly in your colon and sometimes found in your mother's milk. It looks like a tiny branch under a microscope. This bacterium is like a tiny digestion expert. It helps break down complex foods, like fibers and some starches, which keeps your gut happy. By doing this, it helps your body get more nutrients from the food you eat. It's also good for your immune system, teaching it to tell the difference between helpful and harmful stuff, which keeps you healthier.

AG1 by Athletic Greens Potential Benefits

Let’s take a look at the main benefits of AG1 by Athletic Greens. Of course, AG1 by Athletic Greens contains 75 ingredients in total, so there will be many more benefits, but these are the most important ones.

Here’s an overview:

Boosting Energy Levels

Athletic Greens contains various ingredients that are linked to boosting energy levels naturally, without the use of caffeine.

For example, vitamins (especially B) don’t just play a role in the immune system, but also energy production.

  • Vitamins and Minerals: B vitamins are crucial for energy production.
  • Superfoods: Spirulina and chlorella provide a natural energy boost.

Supporting Immune Function

Of course, with a wealth of vitamins and minerals, one of AG1s core functions is the ability to support the immune system. But it also contains various other ingredients that can strengthen the immune system such as probiotics, and superfoods.

  • Vitamins and Minerals: Vitamins are key for immune support.
  • Probiotics: Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium bifidum enhance the immune system.
  • Superfoods: Ingredients like acerola, high in vitamin C, support immune health.

Enhancing Mental Clarity and Focus

Mental clarity and focus are another benefit that’s advertised, and from a scientific point of view, it makes sense. Here’s why:

  • Adaptogens: Herbs like ashwagandha and rhodiola rosea improve mental clarity and focus.
  • Superfoods: Cocoa bean polyphenol extract and green tea extract have cognitive benefits.

Additionally, vitamins (again, especially B vitamins) can also boost brain function, focus and memory if you were previously not getting them from your diet.

Promoting Digestive Health

AG1 also contains Digestive enzymes which are proteins produced by the body that help break down food into nutrients.

They facilitate the digestion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, making them absorbable by the body.

AG1’s formula promotes digestive health through:

  • Digestive Enzymes and Prebiotics: Enzymes like bromelain and prebiotic fibers improve digestion.
  • Probiotics: Contribute to a balanced gut microbiome.

Supporting Cardiovascular Health

Another advertised benefit of AG1 is that it supports cardiovascular health, through the following:

  • Superfoods and Extracts: Beetroot powder and cocoa bean extract are beneficial for heart health.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: Certain vitamins and minerals, like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and vitamins C, D, and E, are crucial for cardiovascular health. Potassium and magnesium help regulate heart rhythm and blood pressure, calcium aids in muscle function including the heart, while vitamins C, D, and E support blood vessel health and reduce inflammation.

Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties

Anti-inflammatory refers to the property of a substance or treatment that reduces inflammation or swelling in the body. Inflammation is the body's response to injury or infection, often causing redness, heat, swelling, and pain.

Anti-inflammatory agents, like certain herbs, or foods, help to alleviate these symptoms by counteracting the body's inflammatory processes.

AG1 contains some of these foods:

  • Superfoods: Spirulina, chlorella, and green tea extract have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
  • Fruit and Vegetable Extracts: Ingredients like ginger and licorice root have anti-inflammatory properties.

Supporting Healthy Aging

Aging is a natural process, and AG1 aims to support it healthily. With specific ingredients known for their antioxidant properties, AG1 helps in combating the signs of aging at the cellular level, thereby promoting overall health and longevity.

  • Antioxidants: Ingredients like grape seed extract and bilberry fruit extract combat oxidative stress.
  • Superfoods: Acerola, rich in vitamin C, and other superfoods contribute to healthy aging.

Enhancing Skin and Eye Health

Skin and eye health are crucial aspects of overall well-being. AG1 includes a blend of fruit and vegetable extracts, along with essential vitamins, to nourish and protect the skin and eyes, helping to maintain their health and appearance.

  • Fruit and Vegetable Extracts: Carrot root and rosehip fruit powders are beneficial for skin and eye health.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: Vitamins A, C, and E play a crucial role in skin and eye health.

Supporting Bone Health

Bone health is fundamental for a strong and active life. AG1 supports this through a combination of essential minerals and superfood ingredients that are known to enhance bone density and strength.

  • Vitamins and Minerals: Calcium is essential for bone health.
  • Superfoods: Ingredients like spirulina also contribute to bone health.

Stress Management

Managing stress is key to maintaining overall health. AG1 incorporates adaptogens known for their ability to help the body cope with both physical and mental stress, thus supporting a balanced lifestyle.

  • Adaptogens: Ashwagandha and other adaptogens help the body cope with physical and mental stress.

AG1 Pricing: How Much Does AG1 Cost?

The cost of AG1 by Athletic Greens in the UK varies depending on the purchasing option you choose.

For a one-time purchase, the price is £97, which works out to approximately £3.23 per serving. If you opt for a monthly subscription, the price is reduced to £79 (or £2.63 per serving).

So, pricing wise it is on the higher side compared to other competitors, especially compared to competitors like Verve V80, which is more nutrition dense at a lower cost.

Anecdotal Experiences: What Others Say About AG1

Next, we like to look at anecdotal experiences to give you a better idea of how users feel.

Keep in mind, these are just anecdotal experiences, and there’s always a lot of factors because everyone reacts differently; placebos, intolerances, taste, too high expectations and many more.

We’ve tried to include a variety so you can take the ones that are most relevant to you into account.

Overall, the reviews on Trustpilot have a 2.8/5 rating. But in fairness to Athletic Greens, we also have to consider things like happy customers often not reviewing (which is another factor why we say take these things pinch of salt.)

The Good:

Let’s start with the good, many reviews are saying it makes them feel better, and we’ve added some of them below.

It’s also widely recommended by influencers such as Andrew Huberman, so that’s a plus as well (although you do have to consider their $2.2 million/mo podcast spend when it comes to this).

The Bad:

Now let’s talk about the bad.

Auto-immune disorders:

One of the most common themes in the negative reviews is that it’s not suitable for people with auto-immune disorders. There have been people mentioning that it’s been making them feel sick, or heavily fatigued. And we do have to remember that everyone reacts differently, but if you have an auto-immune disorder, it’s something to keep in mind.

No noticeable difference:

Other reviewers have mentioned they didn’t feel a noticeable difference from it. This could be down to the proprietary blends, and underdosing, but it could also partly  be due to users having too high expectations.

Subscriptions and customer service:

This is a separate issue, but definitely something to keep in mind. A lot of complaints mentioned they had trouble cancelling subscriptions, or just dealing with customer service in general.
