Two facts first. No ingredient sold over the counter as a food supplement in the UK has an authorised health claim for sleep. And melatonin is a prescription-only medicine here (the NHS: "Melatonin is available on prescription only"), so none of the products below contains it. That leaves the label. Nine UK brands sell an evening capsule or tablet, and their labels differ in four ways: how much magnesium a serving gives and in what form; which botanicals and amino acids are listed, and whether each has an extract ratio and a milligram figure; which vitamins and minerals sit alongside; and how many capsules make a serving, from one to four. Magnesium, zinc and vitamin B6 have authorised claims, quoted here only where a product gives at least 15% of the nutrient reference value (NRV). The botanicals, L-theanine, 5-HTP and L-tryptophan have none, so this article says what they are and how each label states them, and makes no claim beyond that.
The short answer
- Most magnesium per serving, every extract labelled: Verve Eclipse Duo, 200mg (54% NRV, citrate and oxide) in two Midnight capsules, plus eleven plant and mushroom extracts, 150mg L-theanine, zinc and vitamin B6 across four capsules a night. No testing statement on the page.
- A named testing standard on the page: Together Health Night Time ("Third party UKAS accredited tested", BRC-certified manufacture, made in the UK) and Nutravita Natural Night Complex (batch tested in the UK, GMP and BRC named).
- One capsule or tablet a night: Form ZZZZs, Nutravita Natural Night Complex and Healthspan Night Time 5-HTP.
- 5-HTP stated in milligrams: Together Health and Form at 100mg a serving, and Healthspan at 50mg, which is also the only label naming magnesium glycinate.
- Actives and a capsule shell, nothing else listed: Vitl Sweet Sleep, and Innermost The Reset Capsules (the only one without magnesium).
- Pack sizes at either end: Nutravita, 120 capsules at one a night; Form ZZZZs, 30 at one a night.

What the nine labels say
Eight of the nine contain magnesium, from 60mg (Vitl per capsule, Neubria, Healthspan) to 200mg (Verve), and all eight give at least the 15% NRV at which the authorised claim "Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function" may be used. Oxide is the commonest form (Nutravita, Neubria, H&B and 140mg of Verve's 200mg), then citrate (Form, Vitl and Verve's other 60mg); Healthspan names glycinate and Together Health a sea-water source. Verve, Nutravita and Vitl give a ratio or standardisation for every plant extract; Neubria folds four into one 2,820mg figure; Form, Together Health and Innermost give milligrams without ratios. Zinc is on four labels at 50% NRV or more ("Zinc contributes to normal cognitive function") and vitamin B6 on four, at 1.4mg to 2.8mg ("Vitamin B6 contributes to normal psychological function"), all under the NHS 10mg a day guide for supplements. Two brands name a testing standard, Innermost says its ingredients are batch tested, and six, Verve included, state nothing.
The products in detail
Verve Eclipse Duo
Eclipse Duo is the product we make: two capsule types, two of each a night, 30 nights a box. Twilight, an hour before bed: 150mg L-theanine and six plant and mushroom extracts, each with a ratio and equivalent weight, plus 2mg vitamin B6 (142% NRV) and 5mg zinc (50%). Midnight, at bedtime: 200mg magnesium (54% NRV), 60mg as citrate and 140mg as oxide, and five more extracts. "Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function"; "Zinc contributes to normal cognitive function". The B6 is 2mg against the NHS guide of no more than 10mg a day from supplements. Where it is behind: no testing statement on the page (Together Health and Nutravita have one), no storage line, four capsules a night is the most here, most of the magnesium is oxide, and the list adds bulking and anti-caking agents where Vitl and Innermost list a shell only. £29.99 one-off (£1.00 a night) or £23.99 a month on subscription (80p a night). Who it suits: anyone who wants the most magnesium in the table and every extract labelled, and does not mind four capsules a night.
Form ZZZZs
One capsule 30 to 60 minutes before bed, in a glass jar of 30 or 60. Six actives: 250mg L-glycine (an amino acid), 105mg magnesium as citrate (28% NRV), 100mg 5-HTP from Griffonia seed extract, 40mg L-theanine (an amino acid found in tea), 10mg zinc as citrate (100% NRV) and 2.5mg Bioperine black pepper extract. No extract ratios. A hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose shell and magnesium stearate are the only other ingredients. Store in a cool, dry place. The page gives no testing statement, base or place of manufacture. Who it suits: anyone who wants one capsule a night with 5-HTP and glycine, and a 30-capsule jar to start with.
Nutravita Natural Night Complex
One capsule before bedtime, 120 to a pack: four months at one a night, the longest pack here. Per capsule: 187.5mg magnesium as oxide (50% NRV), 50mg L-tryptophan (an essential amino acid), lemon balm 4:1 25mg and chamomile 12:1 8.3mg (each footnoted as equivalent to 100mg of plant), and vitamin D3, B12 and biotin, each at 100% NRV. Other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose and a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose shell. The page says "manufactured, batch tested and certified in the UK" and names GMP and BRC; there is no certificate and no storage line. Who it suits: anyone who wants a high-magnesium single capsule, a UK batch-testing statement and a four-month pack.
Vitl Sweet Sleep
The nutrition table is per capsule: 60mg magnesium as citrate (16% NRV), 100mg L-theanine, 240mg lemon balm 6:1 extract, 32mg Montmorency cherry 5:1 extract (a sour cherry), 10mg zinc as picolinate (100% NRV) and 1.4mg vitamin B6 as pyridoxal-5-phosphate (100% NRV). The ingredients are those six and a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose capsule, with no bulking or anti-caking agents. The page leaves out how many capsules a night ("take as directed on the packaging"), the pack size (retail listings say 30), testing, storage and where Vitl is based. Who it suits: anyone who wants a short, filler-free label with L-theanine and lemon balm at a stated ratio, and will read the pack for the dose.
Neubria Drift
Two capsules an hour before bedtime. Per serving: 60mg magnesium as oxide (16% NRV), 200mg L-tryptophan, vitamin D3 10µg (200%), folic acid 100µg (50%) and a "Bliss Botanical Complex" of 2,820mg raw herb equivalent, from extracts of lemon balm, hops, chamomile and saffron. None of the four has its own milligram figure or ratio. Other ingredients are a hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose shell, maltodextrin and rice starch carrying the lemon balm, magnesium stearate and a vegan vitamin D3 oil. The page gives no pack size (retail listings say 60), testing statement, storage line or UK base. Who it suits: anyone who wants L-tryptophan and vitamin D on the label and is content with one figure for the botanicals.
Together Health Night Time
Two capsules 30 minutes before bed, 60 to a pack, 30 servings. Three actives: 188mg magnesium (50% NRV) from "purified mineral-rich water", a sea-water source; 100mg 5-HTP from Griffonia seed extract; and 100mg hop extract (hops are the flower used in brewing). Vegetable cellulose shell, coconut extract flow aid, no ratios. This is the fullest testing statement in the table: "Third party UKAS accredited tested", tested for pesticides and heavy metals, "BRC certified manufacture", every batch analysed by independent laboratories, made in the UK. Store cool and dry; use within 60 days of opening. The label warns against taking it with antidepressants, including MAOIs. Who it suits: anyone who wants a three-line label with 100mg 5-HTP and a named testing standard.
H&B Expert Sleep Night 5-HTP
Holland & Barrett's own brand. The name says 60 capsules; the directions say "Take 2 Tablet/tablets per day, preferably with a meal". Per two tablets: 2.8mg vitamin B6 (200% NRV, the most here), 100mg magnesium as oxide (27%), 485mg DailyZz (a branded blend of spearmint and green tea extracts), 250mg Griffonia seed extract 4:1 with no 5-HTP figure, 10mg Montmorency cherry extract 50:1 and 2.5mg Bioperine. Bulking, glazing and anti-caking agents and glycerol make up the rest. No testing statement, storage line or place of manufacture. Who it suits: anyone buying in a Holland & Barrett store who wants Griffonia and magnesium in a tablet.
Healthspan Night Time 5-HTP
One tablet an hour before bedtime, 60 to a pack. Per tablet: 167mg Griffonia seed extract (equivalent to 3.3g of seed) providing 50mg 5-HTP, and 300mg buffered magnesium glycinate at 20%, giving 60mg magnesium (16% NRV); the ingredients list names it as bisglycinate and oxide. Then vitamin D3 10µg (200%), B6 1.4mg (100%), folic acid 200µg (100%), B12 10µg (400%) and zinc 5mg as citrate (50%). A bulking agent, a talc-based glaze and two anti-caking agents make up the rest. Store in a cool, dry place in the original packaging. The page's quality standards and batch certificate sections are empty; the company address is in Guernsey. Who it suits: anyone who wants one tablet with 50mg 5-HTP, magnesium glycinate and three B vitamins.
Innermost The Reset Capsules
Two capsules before bedtime, 60 to a jar, 30 servings, and the only product here with no magnesium. Per serving: 350mg reishi (a mushroom), 250mg L-glycine, 125mg schisandra berry, 125mg lemon balm (one line on the page says 100mg), 125mg chamomile and 24mg vitamin E (36 IU), with no %NRV and no ratios. The rest is "a plant-based capsule shell, and nothing else". The page says ingredients are batch tested before manufacture; there is no third-party wording, certificate or storage line. Innermost is registered in London. Who it suits: anyone who wants reishi, glycine and lemon balm without magnesium or fillers.
Others you will see named
Applied Nutrition sells a 60-capsule evening product with lion's mane, ashwagandha, chamomile and lemon balm extracts at 10:1, L-theanine, magnesium oxide and vitamins D3 and K2, under an "Informed-Sport Tested" heading; its nutrition panel is an image our tools could not read, so it is not in the table. Myprotein's evening capsule page shows no ingredients or nutrition table. Wild Nutrition's Night Time Duo page would not let our tools read it, and Bulk's site blocks them. We found no night-time product at Heights or Free Soul. Lamberts, BioCare and Nutrigums appear in UK round-ups; we did not read their pages. Momentous and BiOptimizers are US brands.
How to compare sleep supplements
- Read the magnesium line twice. What counts is elemental magnesium and its %NRV: 300mg of magnesium glycinate at 20% is 60mg of magnesium (Healthspan). Then check the form, and whether a product mixes two (Verve: citrate and oxide).
- Extract weight is not plant weight. "Lemon balm 4:1 200mg (eq. to 800mg)" is 200mg of extract standing in for 800mg of leaf. A label with only one of the two figures tells half the story.
- Per capsule or per serving? Vitl's table is per capsule, Neubria's and Together Health's per two, Verve's per two of each type, four a night.
- Blends hide amounts. One figure for four botanicals (Neubria, 2,820mg) or a branded blend (H&B's DailyZz, 485mg) gives no milligram for any single one.
- Add up the vitamins. B6 runs from 1.4mg to 2.8mg here, under the NHS 10mg a day supplement guide; vitamin D3 is 200% NRV on two labels. Count what else you take.
- Price the plan you will actually be on. One-off, monthly and quarterly plans differ. Check each brand's site for today's price; we have not compared prices in this article.
Sleep supplements: your questions
How much magnesium do UK sleep supplements put in a serving?
Between 60mg and 200mg, or 16% to 54% NRV: Verve Eclipse Duo 200mg (citrate and oxide), Together Health 188mg (sea-water source), Nutravita 187.5mg (oxide), Form 105mg (citrate), H&B Expert 100mg (oxide), and Vitl (per capsule), Neubria and Healthspan 60mg each. Innermost has none. This is what the labels say, not a recommendation.
Which UK sleep supplements say how they are tested?
Together Health ("Third party UKAS accredited tested", pesticides and heavy metals, BRC-certified UK manufacture) and Nutravita (batch tested and certified in the UK, GMP and BRC). Innermost says its ingredients are batch tested before manufacture. Verve, Form, Vitl, Neubria, H&B and Healthspan state nothing on the product page. None links a certificate of analysis.
Which contain 5-HTP or L-tryptophan, and how much?
5-HTP is 5-hydroxytryptophan, taken from the seed of Griffonia simplicifolia, a West African plant; L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid. Together Health and Form label 100mg of 5-HTP a serving, Healthspan 50mg, and H&B 250mg of 4:1 Griffonia extract without a 5-HTP figure. Nutravita labels 50mg of L-tryptophan and Neubria 200mg. Verve, Vitl and Innermost contain neither. Read the cautions on any label with 5-HTP.
How many capsules a night is a serving?
One for Form, Nutravita and Healthspan (a tablet); two for Neubria, Together Health, Innermost and H&B (tablets); four for Verve, two Twilight an hour before bed and two Midnight at bedtime. Vitl's page says to follow the pack. A 60-capsule pack is 60 nights at one a night or 30 at two.
Does Verve Eclipse Duo contain anything other than the listed actives?
Yes. Both capsule types are hydroxypropyl methylcellulose shells, with microcrystalline cellulose as a bulking agent and magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide as anti-caking agents. The saffron extract is carried on maltodextrin, and the L-theanine comes as 375mg of green tea leaf extract standardised to 40%. Vitl and Innermost list a shell and nothing else.
Where can I buy these sleep supplements in the UK?
All nine sell direct from their own websites, and H&B Expert is in Holland & Barrett stores. Search results also show Together Health at Superdrug, Ocado and Waitrose, Vitl and Neubria at Holland & Barrett, Form at Healf and Selfridges, and Innermost at John Lewis; we have not checked those listings. Every label fact above was taken from the brand's own website on 5 November 2026: vavaverve.com, formnutrition.com, nutravita.com (the .co.uk address redirects there), vitl.com, neubria.com, togetherhealth.co.uk, hollandandbarrett.com (its api subdomain, as the main page showed only a title), healthspan.co.uk and innermostglobal.com, using the store's own product data feed where a page would not render. The NHS wording quoted above was read on nhs.uk the same day, and the claim wordings were checked against retained Regulation (EU) No 432/2012 on legislation.gov.uk. Where a page did not state a figure we have written "Not stated" rather than guessing, and we have not repeated any brand's claims about what these ingredients do. Prices are deliberately not compared here: they change weekly and promotions distort them. Every brand's current price is on its own site.
