Updated November 2026. Label facts checked on 5 November 2026 on each brand's own UK website. Verve makes one of the products below (Berberine 300mg + ALA 600mg Capsules), so read the table before you read our view.

Nine UK brands sell berberine in capsules, and their labels differ in four ways that matter more than the number on the front: what that number refers to (berberine hydrochloride, a plant extract, or a phytosome complex), the dose per serving (300mg to 1136mg, in one, two or three capsules), whether a purity figure is given (four of nine), and what else is in the capsule (five are berberine alone; the others add alpha lipoic acid, milk thistle or AstraGin). None of the nine links a certificate of analysis on its page. Berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid from the roots and bark of plants such as Indian barberry (Berberis aristata), usually sold as its hydrochloride salt, berberine HCl; alpha lipoic acid, which two of the nine add, is an organosulfur compound. That is the chemistry, and this article makes no claim beyond it. Here are the nine UK berberine products that come up most often, on their labels.

The short answer

  • Berberine with alpha lipoic acid, both doses stated separately: Verve Berberine 300mg + ALA 600mg Capsules, two capsules a day, 60 capsules, 30 servings. Berberine HCl at 97%; every batch tested, certificate on request.
  • Most berberine per labelled serving: Holland & Barrett Berberine 1000mg (1136mg berberine HCl from 1171mg Berberis aristata extract, two capsules), then Applied Nutrition (2 x 500mg berberine hydrochloride 97%) and Time Health (1000mg Berbevis phytosome, berberine not stated).
  • One 500mg capsule, berberine and a shell and nothing else: Charava Berberine 500mg (60 capsules, glass bottle) and WeightWorld Berberine Capsules (120 capsules, extract standardised to 85%).
  • Purity figure on the page: VitaBright (berberine HCl 98%), Applied Nutrition and Verve (97%), WeightWorld (85% extract).
  • Lab results linked on the page: WeightWorld. Named testing programme: Applied Nutrition, Informed Sport batch testing for banned substances.
  • Phytosome rather than berberine HCl: Time Health Berbevis, Indian barberry extract with pea extract, sunflower lecithin and grape seed extract.
  • Berberine with other actives: Youth & Earth Berberine+ (900mg berberine, 300mg Na R-alpha lipoic acid, biotin, chromium, three capsules) and NMN Bio Berberine 400mg with Milk Thistle (amount not stated).

Best berberine supplement UK: the comparison table

Every column is a label fact taken from the product page. "Not stated" means the page does not give it. Prices are left out on purpose; each brand's current price is on its own site, and the reason is in "How we checked".

300mg berberine and 600mg ALA per serving

From £17.24/month

What the nine labels say

The front-of-pack number means three different things. For six brands it is berberine HCl. For WeightWorld it is berberine from an extract standardised to 85%. For Time Health it is the weight of the whole phytosome complex, and Youth & Earth gives a branded berberine with no salt form. Only Holland & Barrett states both extract weight and berberine HCl. Per serving the range is 300mg (Verve) to 1136mg (Holland & Barrett). Four of nine give a purity figure. Seven say they test; Time Health and Holland & Barrett show nothing. No brand links a certificate of analysis. Five labels are berberine alone; Verve and Youth & Earth add alpha lipoic acid, NMN Bio milk thistle, Applied Nutrition AstraGin. Every named shell is hypromellose or vegetable cellulose; Verve does not name its shell. Four brands give storage advice.

The products in detail

Verve Berberine 300mg + ALA 600mg Capsules

Verve Berberine 300mg + ALA 600mg is the product we make, and one of two here that pair berberine with alpha lipoic acid (Youth & Earth is the other): 300mg of berberine (berberine HCl at 97%) and 600mg of alpha lipoic acid per two-capsule serving. Sixty capsules, 30 servings, two capsules once a day with a meal. Every batch is tested for purity; the certificate of analysis, with the purity figure, is available on request from hello@vavaverve.com. The label says to speak to a healthcare professional before use if you take medication for diabetes or blood sugar, or any prescribed medication. The gaps: most products here are berberine alone; the berberine dose is the lowest in the table; the page does not name the capsule shell (all eight others do) or give a storage line (four do); the certificate is on request, not linked. £22.99 one-off (77p a serving), £17.24 a month (57p) or £46.75 a quarter for three packs (52p). Who it suits: anyone who wants berberine and alpha lipoic acid together, both doses on the label, and a certificate they can ask for.

Charava Berberine 500mg

Sixty capsules of 500mg berberine HCl in an amber glass bottle; 120 and 180-day options are also sold. The ingredient list is two lines, berberine and a hypromellose capsule. Directions differ on the page: "1 capsule with or before meals, up to 3 times daily" in one place, "1 - 2 capsules" in the FAQ, so the bottle lasts 20 to 60 days. Third-party tested for purity, with no percentage and no certificate shown. No storage advice. UK-made in GMP-certified facilities. Who it suits: anyone who wants single 500mg capsules of berberine HCl with nothing but the shell, in glass.

Time Health Berberine Phytosome (Berbevis)

The only phytosome in the table. A two-capsule serving is labelled 1000mg of Berbevis berberine phytosome, and the ingredient list spells out what that is: Indian barberry extract, pea extract, phospholipids from sunflower lecithin and grape seed extract, in a vegan hypromellose shell. The page does not say how much berberine the 1000mg contains, and gives no purity figure, no testing statement beyond "GMP standards", no certificate and no storage advice. Sixty and 120-capsule sizes. Registered in Uckfield, England; place of manufacture not stated. Who it suits: anyone who wants the phytosome form and accepts a complex weight rather than a berberine figure.

Holland & Barrett Berberine 1000mg

The retailer's own brand, with the most detailed dose line in the table: 1171mg of Indian barberry extract (Berberis aristata, root) per two capsules, "providing 1136mg of berberine HCl per daily serving". Sixty capsules, two a day with food, so 30 servings. The ingredients are the extract, an HPMC shell and two anti-caking agents; the text says AstraGin has been added, but it is not in the ingredients list. No purity figure, testing statement, certificate, storage advice or place of manufacture. Who it suits: anyone who wants the highest labelled berberine HCl per serving in a high-street pack.

VitaBright Berberine HCl 98%

Ninety capsules of 500mg berberine HCl 98%, from Berberis aristata roots and bark, with an HPMC shell and rice flour as the other two ingredients. The serving is one to three capsules, so the pack is "30 to 90 days, depending on dose", with two sets of directions on the page. The 98% is the clearest purity statement in the table. Testing is a "Lab Tested" badge with heavy-metal and batch testing, no certificate shown. Storage: cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. UK-made in South Croydon. Who it suits: anyone who wants a stated 98% berberine HCl and a flexible one-to-three capsule serving.

WeightWorld Berberine Capsules

One hundred and twenty capsules of 500mg berberine, one a day with a meal, so 120 servings, the longest-lasting pack here. The berberine is Berberis aristata standardised to 85%; the salt form is not stated. The ingredient list is berberine and a hypromellose shell; no magnesium stearate, binders or colours. Testing is the strongest on-page evidence short of a certificate: "Independently Lab-Tested" with a "See Lab Results" link. Storage: cool, dry place. Ships from the UK; place of manufacture not stated. Who it suits: anyone who wants a four-month pack of 500mg capsules and lab results they can click on.

Applied Nutrition Berberine Capsules 1000mg

Sixty capsules of 500mg berberine hydrochloride 97% (Berberis aristata), two with a main meal, so 1000mg a serving and 30 servings. The only product here under a named testing programme: Informed Sport, every batch tested for banned substances. No certificate of analysis is mentioned. The capsule carries more than most: microcrystalline cellulose, 35mg of AstraGin (astragalus and Panax notoginseng extracts), magnesium stearate and a hypromellose shell. Storage: cool, dry place. Place of manufacture not stated. Who it suits: anyone who wants 1000mg a serving at a stated 97% with Informed Sport testing, and does not mind excipients.

NMN Bio Berberine 400mg with Milk Thistle

The thinnest label here. The name gives 400mg of berberine and the page address gives 60 capsules, but the page states neither a dose per capsule nor a serving size; the directions say to follow the label. The ingredients are berberine HCl, milk thistle (silymarin) with no amount, microcrystalline cellulose and a vegetable cellulose shell. No purity figure. "Third-party tested and packaged in a GMP-certified UK facility", with no certificate wording. No storage advice. Made in the UK, in London. Who it suits: anyone who wants berberine with milk thistle and will read the physical label for the numbers.

Youth & Earth Berberine+

Formerly Releaf, and the other product here with alpha lipoic acid. A three-capsule serving is labelled 900mg berberine (Himaberb), 300mg Na R-alpha lipoic acid (the sodium salt of R-ALA), 1000mcg biotin and 1000mcg chromium picolinate, with rice flour and a vegetable cellulose shell. Directions are one capsule three times a day with food; the introduction says one a day. No capsule count or purity figure. It says a certificate of analysis is published for every batch; we could not see one linked. Storage: away from heat and sunlight, closed container. A UK store; country of manufacture not stated. Who it suits: anyone who wants berberine and R-ALA with biotin and chromium in a three-capsule serving.

Others you will see named

DoNotAge sells Pure Berberine 500mg capsules, but its site showed us US dollar pricing and the ingredients tab would not render for our tools, so it is left out rather than guessed at. Bettervits Berberine (750mg berberine HCl a serving, UK-made) gives no capsule count on its page. Naturecan's UK berberine page would not let our tools read it. Nutri Advanced and Metagenics sell Berberine 250 through practitioner dispensaries; not read here. NaturesPlus is a US brand stocked by Holland & Barrett. Artah and Altru Vita sell blends with no berberine dose found. Thorne, Swanson, NOW Foods, Toniiq, Double Wood, Nutricost and Pure Encapsulations are US brands not checked on a UK site.

How to compare berberine supplements

  • Work out what the number is. "500mg" can be berberine HCl (Charava, VitaBright, Applied Nutrition), berberine from a standardised extract (WeightWorld, 85%), or the weight of a phytosome complex (Time Health). Holland & Barrett gives both.
  • Per capsule, then per serving. Verve's 300mg is two capsules; Charava's 500mg is one; Youth & Earth's 900mg is three. "1 to 3 capsules" (VitaBright) is a range, not a dose.
  • Servings, not capsule count. Sixty capsules is 30 servings at two a day (Verve, Applied Nutrition, Holland & Barrett) or 60 at one a day (Charava). NMN Bio and Youth & Earth state no serving count.
  • Is a purity figure stated? VitaBright 98%, Verve and Applied Nutrition 97%, WeightWorld 85%. "Pure" or "high strength" with no figure is not stated.
  • Is a certificate of analysis available, and how? None of the nine links one. Verve supplies one on request, Youth & Earth says one is published per batch, WeightWorld links lab results, Applied Nutrition is under Informed Sport. Three more say tested with no document; Time Health and Holland & Barrett show nothing.
  • What else is in the capsule. Berberine only: Charava, WeightWorld, VitaBright, Holland & Barrett, Time Health. Second active: Verve (alpha lipoic acid 600mg), Youth & Earth (R-ALA 300mg, biotin, chromium), NMN Bio (milk thistle, no amount), Applied Nutrition (AstraGin 35mg). Then check the excipients.
  • Price the plan you will actually be on. One-off, monthly and quarterly plans differ, and a one-a-day and a two-a-day pack are not the same month. Check each brand's site for today's price; we have not compared prices here.

300mg berberine and 600mg ALA per serving

From £17.24/month

Berberine supplements: your questions

How much berberine per serving do UK brands put in a capsule?

Per serving the labels say 300mg (Verve), 400mg (NMN Bio, from the name), 500mg (Charava, WeightWorld, VitaBright at one capsule), 900mg (Youth & Earth), 1000mg (Applied Nutrition; Time Health as phytosome weight) and 1136mg berberine HCl (Holland & Barrett). Per capsule the range is 150mg (Verve) to 500mg. This is what the labels say, not a recommendation.

Berberine HCl, berberine extract or berberine phytosome: what is the difference on the label?

Berberine HCl is the hydrochloride salt of berberine, a defined compound, so "500mg berberine HCl" is 500mg of that salt, and "97%" or "98%" is its stated content in the raw material. An extract label names the plant (Berberis aristata) and usually a standardisation, such as WeightWorld's 85%. A phytosome label (Time Health's Berbevis) gives the weight of extract bound with phospholipids and carriers, so the berberine inside is a smaller, unstated number. Three numbers for three different things.

Which UK berberine products publish a certificate of analysis?

None of the nine links a certificate on the product page. Verve tests every batch and supplies the certificate of analysis, with the purity figure, on request from hello@vavaverve.com. Youth & Earth says a COA is published for every batch; we did not find one linked. WeightWorld links lab results through a third-party widget. Applied Nutrition is tested under Informed Sport for banned substances. Charava, VitaBright and NMN Bio say tested but show no document. Time Health and Holland & Barrett have no testing statement.

Does Verve's berberine contain anything other than berberine?

Yes, by design: 600mg of alpha lipoic acid per two-capsule serving, stated on the label next to the 300mg of berberine (berberine HCl at 97%). Nothing else is listed in the ingredients table: no rice flour, no anti-caking agent, no blend. The page does not name the capsule shell, which every other brand here does. Every batch is tested and the certificate of analysis is available on request. The label also says to speak to a healthcare professional before use if you take medication for diabetes or blood sugar, or any prescribed medication.

Where can I buy berberine in the UK?

All nine brands sell direct from their own websites. Holland & Barrett also lists Time Health, VitaBright and Applied Nutrition; Boots lists Applied Nutrition. Verve as a brand is also at Boots, Holland & Barrett and Amazon UK; we have not checked the berberine listing at each. Verve Berberine 300mg + ALA 600mg is £22.99 one-off, £17.24 a month or £46.75 a quarter for three packs at vavaverve.com.

How we checked

Every label fact above was taken from the brand's own website on 5 November 2026: vavaverve.com, charava.co.uk, timehealth.co.uk, hollandandbarrett.com, vitabright.co, weightworld.uk, appliednutrition.uk, nmnbio.co.uk and youthandearth.com, using the store's own product data or search endpoint where a page would not render. Where a page did not state a figure we have written "Not stated" rather than guessing, and we have not repeated any brand's claims about what berberine or alpha lipoic acid does. Prices are deliberately not compared here: they change weekly and promotions distort them. Every brand's current price is on its own site. Verve makes Berberine 300mg + ALA 600mg Capsules; the table is label facts, our opinion is in the text.
