Rosie Millen's Journey: From Burnout to Mental Health Advocate and Verve Ambassador

For those of you that don’t know me I’m Rosie, a nutritional therapist in London who is now an OFFICIAL ambassador for Verve!

A little about me: 

I graduated from the Institute of Optimum Nutrition in 2010 with a keen determination to help people all over the world to transform their health just by making small changes to their diet. I was on a mission to help one person at a time understand the impact that food has on our bodies and how it is more powerful than any drug. I absolutely LOVED what I did, and my business went from strength to strength. 

In 2014 however everything changed. On March 6th of that year, I was walking in the park when all of a sudden, my knees went from underneath me, and I collapsed to the ground. I freaked out because nothing like that had ever happened to me before so I got into a taxi, went home, climbed into bed and basically stayed there for the next three years. 

I couldn't move. I was completely paralyzed with exhaustion. I found it difficult to complete small tasks like going to the loo or having a shower. At my worst I couldn't lift my head off the pillow. I slept and slept but no amount of sleep would make me feel better, so I did what anyone would do in that situation, and I took myself to the doctors. 

But when the results came back, I was told that there was nothing wrong with me. I went home frustrated and alone. I knew something underlying was going on so I did a tonne of reading, went to see loads of alternative practitioners, ran multiple tests and everything eventually pointed to the same thing: that I had completely burnt out. 

You’re probably wondering what the hell I was doing before I collapsed? Well I thought I was superwoman! I said yes to everything, worked like a freight train and missed all the warning signs. 

Being in bed for three years was hard. But you know what the hardest things was? It wasn’t not being able to move, it was managing my mental wellbeing. My mental health went out the window. Every day I would wake up in a low mood, was crippled with anxiety and it was a very dark place. 

Recovering from burnout was the hardest thing I ever had to do. It was a very dark place and I had to make A LOT of sacrifices and difficult changes to get back on my feet. 

Today I’m 100% recovered and I specialise in burnout and mental health because my message is simple: Burnout sucks, and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. 

The Work That I Do

Since getting back on my feet I’ve been lucky enough to publish my first book on the subject: Burnout’s a B*tch - the antidote to the overworked world we live in. Writing this book was an enjoyable journey since I knew that people were burning out left right and centre. In fact, the

timing of this book couldn’t be better because just before launching the WHO labelled burnout as a legitimate condition. So being at the forefront of this issue was important for me and I wanted to spread my message to the world as much as possible. 

More recently I’ve been focussing my efforts on mental health. In 2023 I launched Go Mental – the UKs first mental wellbeing festival which was a massive success and this year we are going bigger and better. 

It's a full day of inspirational talks, Q and A panels, interactive workshops and a fitness and meditation class. PLUS there is a mini shopping village where you can browse some of my favourite wellness brands and learn about the top products that will change your mental wellness game. 

The idea of Go Mental is to teach the audience directly from the experts how to tackle anxiety and depression, identify which foods and supplements boost their mood and learn about the tools they need to optimise their mental health. Why Verve?

I started working with Verve about 6 months ago and fell in love with their active greens powder because it’s a powerhouse of nutrients, tastes delicious and is the perfect product to fill in any nutritional gaps. I truly believe that even with a healthy diet, it’s difficult to meet all your nutritional needs because there are so many factors affecting nutrient absorption such as ultra-processed foods, poor digestive health, and stress. 

Luckily the active greens powder covers all these issues. Thanks to the magnesium and family of B vitamins, these nutrients help the cells in our body to produce energy. The herbs ashwagandha and panax ginseng are powerful agents in reducing levels of cortisol in the bloodstream and the probiotic strains Bifidobacterium Bifidum and Lactobacillus Rhamnosus are excellent for supporting gut health. Probiotics play a key role in absorbing the nutrients from our food. 

Buying supplements can be confusing but one thing that sets verve apart is the display of the NRV – The Nutrient Reference Value. Each ingredient should express what percentage of that nutrient is actually in the product. You want to aim for 100% or as close to that as possible! A supplement with 50% NRV vitamin C or 100% NRV vitamin C could both be labelled as containing vitamin C but that’s a sizable difference. 

It’s important to note that some supplement brands and other greens powders on the market don't contain anywhere near 100% NRV of vitamins so just be careful as they may not be enough to benefit your health.
