Updated October 2026. V80 label figures checked on vavaverve.com on 22 October 2026. Verve makes Transparent Greens V80, the example used in this guide.

The best time to take a greens powder is the time you will stick to: once a day, every day. For most people that means with breakfast. With food is the sensible default, because vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble and some people find a greens drink sits badly on an empty stomach. Mix it in cold water, not hot coffee, and if your powder contains caffeine, take it earlier in the day.

The short answer

  • Best time: the one you will keep. For most people, once a day with breakfast.
  • Food: with a meal is the better default. Vitamins A, D, E and K are absorbed along with fat from food.
  • Coffee: fine alongside, not mixed in. Live cultures are sensitive to heat, so use cold water.
  • Training: no special window. A greens powder is not a pre-workout or an electrolyte drink.
  • Other supplements: add up the label totals, especially vitamin A, vitamin D and zinc.

Why the habit matters more than the hour

There is no strong case that one time of day is better than another for the vitamins and minerals in a greens powder. Taking it daily matters more. Vitamin C, the B vitamins and folic acid are water-soluble. UK government health advice says they are not stored in the body, so you need them more often.

Morning is the most common choice, and it is what we suggest for V80. Breakfast happens every day, so the habit sticks. A meal gives the fat-soluble vitamins some fat to be absorbed with. Any caffeine is long gone by bedtime. No breakfast? Use your first meal. Missed a day? Carry on as normal, without doubling up.

With or without food

You can take a greens powder on an empty stomach if it agrees with you. But with food is the better default, for two reasons.

  • Fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamins A, D, E and K are found mainly in fatty foods and are absorbed along with fat from a meal. If your powder has added A, D, E and K, as V80 does, a breakfast with some fat in it (eggs, yoghurt, milk or avocado) is a sensible partner.
  • Comfort. A greens powder carries fibre, plant powders and often live cultures. Some people find that sits badly on an empty stomach. If that is you, have it with food.

One useful pairing: vitamin C increases iron absorption. V80 has no iron, but it does carry 80mg of vitamin C (100% of the NRV). So having it with a meal that contains iron, such as meat, beans, dried apricots or fortified breakfast cereal, is a good match.

Greens powder and coffee

Do not stir the powder into hot coffee or tea. Live cultures are sensitive to heat, which is why V80's directions say cold water or a shake. Have your greens in a separate glass, before or alongside your coffee.

Count the caffeine. Some greens powders contain caffeine from guarana or green tea. V80 has 11mg a serving from guarana. For scale, a mug of instant coffee has around 100mg and a mug of filter coffee around 140mg. If you are sensitive to caffeine, keep your greens to the morning.

If you also take an iron supplement, take it apart from your coffee. Tea and coffee contain a substance that can make it harder for the body to absorb iron, and UK advice is to avoid drinking them with meals or straight after.

Before or after training

There is no special window for a greens powder around exercise. It is a daily nutrition habit, not a pre-workout or a recovery drink.

  • A drink with fibre and plant powders just before a hard session can feel heavy. If it does, have it with a meal an hour or two before, or with food afterwards.
  • It is not an electrolyte drink. V80 has 0.08g of salt per serving, a small fraction of the sodium lost in a sweaty session. On high-sweat days, add an electrolyte drink. Our guide to electrolyte powders without sugar compares the UK options on the label.
  • If you take creatine, it can go in the same glass. Unflavoured creatine monohydrate mixes into most drinks.

Afternoon or evening

If mornings are chaos, later in the day works too. The same rules apply: with food if you can, cold water, and mind the caffeine. You may see botanicals such as ashwagandha on greens labels, V80's included (100mg of a 5:1 root extract). We make no claims for them, and they are not a reason to save a greens powder for bedtime.

Alongside other supplements

Here timing matters less than the label. Many greens powders carry added vitamins and minerals, so they overlap with a multivitamin.

  • Multivitamin. V80 has all 13 vitamins at 100% NRV and is meant to replace a daily multivitamin, not add to one. If you take both, add up the totals.
  • Vitamin A. The NHS says that if you take supplements containing vitamin A, your daily intake from food and supplements should not go over 1,500μg. V80 has 800μg.
  • Zinc. UK advice is not to take more than 25mg of zinc from supplements a day unless a doctor advises it. V80 has 10mg.
  • Vitamin D. The NHS says everyone should consider a daily 10μg vitamin D supplement in autumn and winter. V80 has 5μg: 100% of the NRV, but half the NHS figure. A separate 10μg supplement fits alongside it, and 15μg in total is well under the NHS maximum of 100μg a day.
  • Iron. V80 contains no iron. If you need iron, take it separately, apart from tea and coffee.

If you take any medication, speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting a greens powder. This matters most for blood thinners such as warfarin, where NHS dietary advice is to keep vitamin K intake steady. V80 has 75μg of vitamin K per serving. If you are pregnant or trying for a baby, NHS maternity advice is not to take supplements containing vitamin A (retinol). V80 contains vitamin A as retinyl acetate, so speak to your midwife or GP first.

What V80 contains that matters for timing

Transparent Greens V80 is Verve's greens powder: 80 ingredients per 10g stick, every dose on the label. The figures relevant to timing:

  • All 13 vitamins at 100% NRV, including the four fat-soluble ones: vitamin A 800μg, vitamin D3 5μg, vitamin E 12mg and vitamin K 75μg. That is why we suggest taking it with breakfast.
  • Vitamin C 80mg (100% NRV). Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
  • Vitamin B12 2.5μg (100% NRV). Vitamin B12 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Nine minerals: zinc 10mg (100% NRV), chromium 70%, phosphorus 16%, and potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese and copper at 15% each, plus selenium. No iron, and no iodine declared.
  • 8 billion CFU of live cultures: Lactobacillus rhamnosus 4 billion and Bifidobacterium bifidum 4 billion.
  • 11mg of caffeine per serving from guarana.
  • Vegan. Gluten free by batch testing, with certificates on request. Contains wheat grass and barley grass. May contain traces of hazelnut and walnut.

Every batch is independently tested for heavy metals. The direction is one stick a day in 250-300ml of cold water or a shake. Shake it in a bottle and drink it soon after mixing. The full ingredient table is on the Transparent Greens V80 page.

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake.

When to take greens powder: your questions

Is it better to take greens powder in the morning or at night?

There is no strong case for one over the other. What counts is taking it every day. Morning with breakfast is the easiest to keep up and keeps any caffeine away from bedtime. V80 has 11mg of caffeine per serving.

Can I take greens powder on an empty stomach?

Yes, if it agrees with you. With a meal is the better default, because vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble and are absorbed along with fat from food.

Can I mix greens powder into my coffee?

Not hot coffee. Live cultures are sensitive to heat, so use cold water or a shake. Have your greens in a separate glass: V80 adds 11mg of caffeine, against around 100mg in a mug of instant coffee.

Should I take greens powder before or after a workout?

Either works. If a drink with fibre feels heavy before training, have it afterwards with a meal. On high-sweat days, add an electrolyte drink: V80 has only 0.08g of salt per serving.

Can I take a greens powder and a multivitamin together?

Check the totals first. V80 already has all 13 vitamins at 100% NRV and is meant to replace a multivitamin. If you take both, keep vitamin A from food and supplements under 1,500μg a day and zinc from supplements under 25mg a day.
